Now Professor of History, Michael Burger served as dean of AUM’s School of Liberal Arts and then its College of Arts and Sciences 2009-2017.  The author of Bishops, Clerks, and Diocesan Governance in Thirteenth-Century England:  Reward and Punishment (Cambridge University Press, 2012) and The Shaping of the West (Broadview Press, 2008; second edition, University of Toronto Press, 2013), he has also written various articles on medieval history.  Professor Burger has also edited a primary source collection, Sources for the History of Western Civilization (Broadview Press, 2003; second edition, University of Toronto Press, 2015).  He holds the Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of California, Santa Barbara, and the B.A. from Michigan State University.  He serves as the president of Episcopus:  The Society for the Study of Bishops and the Secular Clergy in the Middle Ages.  But his chief claim to fame is having once lived in a former twelfth-century chapel that had been converted into a residence.
